Teaching Children to Shade with Confidence
Shading is the skill that turns a flat coloring page into a picture with light in it — and children pick it up faster than most adults expect.

Most children color with even pressure from edge to edge, and the result is bright and flat. Shading adds one idea to that: light comes from somewhere. Once a child understands that, everything they color changes.
Ask one question first
Before any color goes down, ask: where is the sun in this picture? Point at it. Everything facing the sun stays light. Everything turned away from it goes darker. That single question does most of the teaching.
Press lighter than feels right
The most common mistake is starting too dark. Teach a soft first pass over the whole shape, then a second pass only on the shadow side. You can always add more; taking color away is much harder.
Shade with dots for a gentle edge
Dots are a forgiving way to shade. Place them close together in the darkest area and further apart as you move toward the light. There is no hard line to get wrong, and the result looks soft and deliberate.
Practise on clouds and trees
Clouds are ideal — white in the middle, a faint tint at the edges. Trees come next: light on top where the sun lands, darker underneath. Two shapes, and a child has the whole idea.
